5.0 out of 5 stars A great read that pulled me in and became personal to me; I’m ready for Armstrong’s next book.
Between the Tracks, Darryl Armstrong’s latest book of short stories has rejuvenated my outlook on reading books. I haven’t finished many books in the past few years, mostly because I’ve only found a few that were worth investing my time. Not only was Between the Tracks worth every moment, now that I’ve finished it, I’ll invest more time in seeking other great reads.
Between the Tracks is a homerun book for me because it’s about the realities of life. It’s L. Darryl Armstrong’s truth of life perspective but written in a way that anyone can relate to his slice-of-life stories.
The key, in every story, is his ability to relate not only his passion for life but also to convey the deep emotions of others encountered along the way. Many stories are chance encounters where someone needed a listener; and he’s a superb listener and writes the story in a way everyone can relate. But many stories are deeply personal; creating the opportunity for me to first understand and appreciate his feelings and then reflect on how that situation relates to my personal journey through life.
After the first few chapters, I realized that reading these heartfelt, easy-flowing stories was time well spent, and I’d get an emotional bonus at the end. The specific types of emotions like capturing the joys, tragedies, and mysteries of life; love, loss, joy, grief, humor, pain, and hope are but a few. I knew at the end of each chapter I’d feel the passion, and I’d smile, wipe a tear, or reflect on my life for a few moments.
And that’s the key for me: the author transported me into his life and emotions, empowering me to pause, reflect, and relate to my own. The book was personal to me, and that’s as powerful an endorsement as I can give a book.
I’ll search for good reads while waiting on Darryl to pen his next book.
