Of all the years of my 56-year career, perhaps the most memorable and enjoyable was my time serving at the Tribune-Courier in the early 1970s. The team from those days, those of us remaining, had a reunion yesterday with lots of laughs, hugs, and recalled memories. As a young man, I dreamed of one day having a weekly newspaper somewhere along the coast while living at the beach. I held onto that dream for many years despite leaving the newspaper in 1973 to become a Fed and later operating my own consulting business for almost 30 years. Weekly, or more importantly, community newspapers of my era no longer exist. It’s not as if people aren’t interested in what Miss Levy in Farmersville wore to church and brought to the potluck, how Mr. Jimbo is doing after his operation on that lousy hip, or how the local football team finally won a game. People are still highly interested in such “news.” However, these days, more than likely, even people my age become informed through our social media accounts. I believe it took dedicated and exceptional people to work at a newspaper, meet deadlines, and interact with the community then, as I do now. At one time, journalists were respected and objective in their coverage. Sadly, those days are gone. However, yesterday, for a few hours, we reveled in our memories of the “old days,” I hope all of us left feeling as if we picked up right where we left off with one another 52 years ago. May God bless you all, and I hope we will do this again with God’s grace. And, yes, I was the Last Man Standing!
