Somewhere in San Antonio, Texas Kamillia Peralta’s legs are kicking beneath a Christmas tree, and that is a miracle.

For 305 days, those same legs kicked against hospital sheets at St. Luke’s Baptist NICU, earning her the nickname “Happy Feet” from nurses who watched over her incubator.

They kicked through surgeries to tuck organs back into her tiny belly—organs that had formed outside her body due to Omphalocele.

They kicked as her parents Luis Torres and Jacklynn Peralta whispered prayers beside her, as community members held vigils, as compassionate and caring medical staff worked through nights.

Yesterday, those kicking feet finally crossed a threshold that wasn’t made of hospital linoleum.

This morning, eight tiny teeth are testing the texture of new toys while Christmas lights reflect in eyes that have known only fluorescent bulbs until now.

Outside their window last night, a bell chimed in the winter air, and another angel got their wings.
